Choose HUMAN as your therapist
Artificial Intelligence (AI) seems to be at the forefront of everyone’s minds nowadays. I hear talks of AI potentially becoming therapists. “I wish a ***** would like a kitchen cabinet,” 2 Chainz rapped in “I’m Different.” Not to gas myself up too much but yes, I do believe my approach as a therapist is unique and superior to AI. I love and care for the work I do with people which requires feelings, something AI falls short of. Below are more significant characteristics to look for when searching for a HUMAN therapist along with reasons why we’re irreplaceable *belts Beyoncé*.
Empathy
Despite all the technological advancements in the world, a computer could never have the level of empathy as I do, as a HUMAN therapist. My lived experience affords me the capacity experience dynamic emotions; as a result, my empathy allows for genuine connections with my clients. I would never assume I know the exact circumstances of someone else. However, I have a high emotional understanding and ability to feel with others, especially when those emotions are uncomfortable. There’s comfort in not feeling alone in the emotional process. For a video interpretation of empathy, click HERE. I could also go into how human connection with others is a catalyst for healing but, instead, I’ll encourage you to read How to Heal by Prentis Hemphill.
Curiosity
They say “curiosity killed the cat?” Well, they also say cats have nine lives. I imagine they’re living each of their lives to the fullest. I’ve learned to question as opposed to judge, especially when it comes to another person’s experience. “We listen and we don’t judge,” (from Tik Tok challenge). Questions lead to understanding and a richer connection. As a therapist, I have the privilege of tagging along on journeys with my clients through their vulnerability. Judgement is not in the vulnerability starter pack. Genuine curiosity allows for objectivity and separation while processing multifaceted emotions. It’s pretty fun to discover the why and build compassion for the what or how during this process. I doubt AI would be able to replicate this.
Transparency
Transparency and a clear intention as a therapist builds trust in the therapeutic relationship. Rather than approaching you with one hand behind my back when going in for a hand shake, I extend both of my arms for a hug. I’m a southern girl after all, we hug in the south. I never want my clients to feel as though I’m hiding something from them. That takes their attention away from the present moment, leading them to hide or go looking for the potential danger elsewhere.
These aren’t all or the only characteristics to have in a therapist, but a short few to look for as green flags. If you’re reading this, it’s evidence of your curiosity about the therapeutic process, and for that, I am eternally grateful. Give yourself a hug for me. Also, remember these characteristics if AI tries to take over the therapeutic field. Your HUMAN therapist will never be successfully replaced by AI. AI will most likely drop you like a bad habit. [SPOILER ALERT] Watch Her if you don’t believe me.
