Why I Choose Grace

TRIGGER WARNING- This post references grief and substance use.

B grace Holistic Healing, PLLC is something I did not envision but has been a major growing pain and blessing, birthed after sudden loss. I formed my therapy practice out of grief after losing, first, my grandmother to alzheimers and, second, my mother to substance use disorder in fall of 2022. Grief has surprisingly had a powerful impact on my growth in the past few years. For instance, it was only after losing my brother to gun violence in July 2020, that I went to therapy “for real,” to do some deep work on my relationship with myself and others. 

I chose to incorporate “grace” into my therapy practice name because it’s what my mother named herself after she got sober for the last time in her life. Her and I had, what many may consider, brief moments throughout my life to connect; yet, I felt an unspoken understanding of her, even more so now. The moment she told me her new name, I immediately knew why. My mother clinged to the grace of God, and I think she frequently hoped for her mother’s grace. There were moments I witnessed this grace first hand. Like when my grandmother would leave a plate of food out under the grill so that my mother had something to eat without the pressure to come inside. There were moments of grace granted by God that I am relieved to not have seen, like her day to day survival while unhoused. I believe my mother knew it was only by God’s grace that she was able to make it.

Grace is what I choose to share with my clients as a starting point for their healing journey. It’s something I believe every person should have as they relate to themselves and others regardless of internal judgements or thoughts of whether it’s deserving or not. I also hope to be given grace as you reflect on this post or if you decide to leave a comment online somewhere. “Keep in mind, I’m an artist and I’m sensitive ‘bout my sh*t,” as Erykah Badu would say.
